The acting, special effects and basic story lines would be acceptable enough on their own, but the problem is no one is bothering to see if what is being presented fits within the lore and functioning of the franchise itself. They alter the appearance of established aliens without any explanation, and not just in small ways, in very drastic ways. That would be fine if this were a reboot, it could even work if the appearance were somehow explained: instead we’re just supposed to accept that they don’t look anything even remotely like they should. (this was done once before in the franchise, but not to this extreme a degree and at least a casual explanation for the change was given within the story). They could have either kept the correct appearance or just introduced a new species without breaking canon. Instead they just gave magic powers to one human without explanation.

You have a ship that magically jumps around in time and space. In a timeline that is supposed to come before humans even have advanced warp speed and have yet to explore some quadrants of the galaxy. But this ship? Magical and able to go anywhere, any time. How much more lore breaking can you get?  These are just a few things off the top of my head. The show has all the tools to be decent, but its constantly disrespectful to its source material and for no other reason than to prove it can be. If this were a brand new sci-fi show in it’s own universe, there’d be nothing to complain about. But as is you can’t claim something is part of an established universe without pissing off a few people unless you are going to play within the established concept of that universe. Instead we have a bunch of appearance and power changes that simply do not fit the time line of where the show claims to exist within it’s own universe. It effectively breaks all the other star trek shows because these types of changes prevent the other shows from existing without being completely re-written.
