Make sure your Otter gets a taste of a junk food festival. Every food festival in Toronto is just sells corn on the cob, fries, hot dogs and soda. Even the third world countries have higher taste than this caveman food. Don’t bother going to the same festival again the next year because it will be ditto. The last but not the least, your pet Otter may want to prefer a beaver as a partner. Get ready to face the emotional onslaught if you are the acting parent of the Otter. In theory, yes. In practice, otters are mostly endangered and taking them from the wild to start a domestic breeding populartion would be an immoral and destructive thing to do. Also, due to their high metabolism, the expense of providing food for otters would makes them expensive pets.

But in terms of their psychology, they are a highly social, highly intelligent animal. They are naturally suspicious of humans which could cause aggressive behaviour but just like with wolves, cats and silver foxes that could be bred out of them surprisingly quickly, probably within a century. They could definitely be domesticated, there’s no physical or psychological reason they couldn’t be. The problem, however, is a moral one. Otters’ mothers are killed for the pet trade, and that’s really an unacceptable price to pay. Plus there’s the practical issues that otters need large bodies of water, large amounts of food and lots of excercise and mental stimulation to stay healthy, so even if they could be bred to act like pets, they’d be extremely expensive to look after. I doubt it would be a financially viable idea even if it’s physically possible.
