When we contrasted it against a dark background, there was no smudginess due to light so no effect! This is it, isn’t it? We took an array of theories. And we shot them down with observations, and evidences pointing away from them. Everyone is quick to point to the oil industry, but its importance is greatly exaggarated. Prior to the oil boom that started in the 1970s, Norway was slightly poorer than Sweden and Denmark. Now we’re slightly richer. That’s the difference the oil industry has made. All three Scandinavian countries have consistently been among the richest.
Contrary to what some may claim, Norway wasn’t dirt poor before the oil boom. Far from it. So the question should rather be, how have all three countries managed to sustain consistently solid economies. A lot of it has to do with politics. We have elected leaders in democratic elections that have kept inequalities to a minimum. We have built our economies around a large, happy and hard-working middle class. It means either that your heart is not pumping enough blood to raise systolic blood pressure or that your vascular system is not relaxing between heart beats, so your diastolic blood pressure does not drop.
